Ilha Deserta (also called Barreta Island) is the southernmost point of mainland Portugal, and it’s exactly what the name promises: a deserted island, in the best way possible.
Why go?
🏝️ Pure nature – no cars, no crowds, no hotels. Just dunes, sand, the sea, and the feeling you’ve dropped off the map (but with sunscreen).
🐦 Ria Formosa Natural Park – the island sits in the middle of this beautiful, protected lagoon, making it a top spot for birdwatching and nature lovers. Flamingos included!
🏖️ Unspoiled beaches – think golden sand, warm Atlantic water, and plenty of space to build sandcastles without someone kicking them over.
🚤 The boat ride – getting there is half the fun! Ferries and speedboats leave from Faro, and it’s a short 30–45 minute trip through the lagoon.

There’s only one restaurant on the island – Estaminé – and it’s surprisingly good, serving fresh seafood with incredible views. Just make sure you book ahead, especially in summer.
Ilha Deserta is a fantastic choice if you’re staying in the Algarve and want a peaceful, nature-filled day with the kids (or a quiet escape from them for an hour if they’re busy digging holes in the sand 😄).
